When To Get A COVID-19 Test For Traveling

You should get a COVID-19 test for traveling if you:

  • Need the certificate for traveling from or to a country that requires a COVID-19 Certificate.
  • Are not vaccinated and have arrived in the US in the past 72 hours.
  • Are vaccinated but start feeling symptoms (fever, dry cough, tiredness, loss of taste or smell, shortness of breath) within a week of your trip.
  • Are vaccinated, but your destination requires a negative PCR test COVID-19 Certificate.
  • Need results the same day for travel.
  • Need a rapid PCR test to avoid self-isolation at your destination.

Do I need a rapid PCR test for domestic travel?

According to the CDC, it’s not a requirement. However, the CDC recommends traveling with a negative test (in some locations, the certificate reduces the self-quarantine period).

Do I need a rapid PCR test before coming to the United States?

All air passengers, including U.S citizens, are required to have a negative COVID-19 test no more than 3 days before travel into the U.S.

Can people who have recently recovered from COVID-19 travel?

If you’ve recovered in the past 3 months, you can follow guidelines for fully vaccinated people. Instead of showing a negative PCR test, you’ll be able to use your recovery document when boarding international flights to the U.S. You also don’t need to get tested 3-5 days after you land in the US if you do not show symptoms.

Do I need to quarantine after a domestic or international trip?

It’s not mandated, but the CDC suggests that unvaccinated passengers quarantine for 7 days with a negative PCR test and 10 days without a test. The same applies for both international and domestic destinations.

What restrictions do other countries have that affect U.S. citizens?

Use the U.S. Department of State – Bureau of Consular Affairs country specific guidelines. If you need more information, contact the local embassy.
