Can You Get an IV Piggyback Administered by a Professional at Home?

This blog will outline the process of having an IV piggyback administered. IV piggybacks used to deliver small doses of diluted medications, such as antibiotics, directly into the bloodstream. Read more to learn about this process.

What is an IV Piggyback, and How Do I Get One?

An intravenous (IV) piggyback (also known as a secondary infusion) administration of medication diluted in a small volume of IV fluid through the main IV line. It involves hanging a secondary, smaller IV bag at least six inches higher than the larger bag. The fluid in the piggyback is administered first and then the main IV bag. This allows the medication to be administered in small doses for a short period of time. Commonly, antibiotics are used in piggyback IVs.

The process of inserting the IV is rather simple. An anesthetic cream is applied where the IV will be inserted. The nurse or other healthcare professional then presses their thumb down on your skin near where they are going to insert the IV line. This prevents the vein from moving. Then the needle and IV catheter is inserted.
