How Does The Delta Covid Variant Affect The Seattle Metro Region?

The Delta variant is a mutation of the Coronavirus that is causing spikes in cases all over the country. This variant is seen as more contagious than the original and is primarily affecting unvaccinated people. There have been breakthrough cases of people getting infected by Covid after being fully vaccinated, but with these cases, the patients are either asymptomatic or have mild symptoms. The Delta Covid variant in Seattle affects the whole state and puts a damper on reopening plans.

The latest from the Emerald City

In August 2021, Governor Jay Inslee of Washington announced that vaccination is required for most state employees, health care providers, and county employees to combat the spread of the Delta variant.

Because of the Delta Covid variant in Seattle, cases are spreading like wildfire, not just with adults but also with children. Health officials are urging people to get vaccinated because the Delta variant is more contagious and seems to infect unvaccinated people. Getting vaccinated can also protect the group that cannot get immunized, including children younger than 12.

Officials see the current surge as similar to the initial Coronavirus surge in winter 2020. The State of Washington has reinstated the statewide mask mandate, including all individuals, regardless of vaccination status. This mandate includes all indoor public settings and includes children from ages five and up.

King County will soon require proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test to attend an outdoor public event for 500 people or more and indoor entertainment and recreational events. You also have to present proof of vaccination to get into most restaurants and bars for both indoor and outdoor dining. This health order goes into effect on October 25, 2021.
