How Accurate Is The Rapid PCR Test?

With many testing options available for the Covid-19 virus, it can be overwhelming to differentiate and know the best choice for you or your loved ones. What may be even more important is understanding the accuracy of each test and other key factors, such as how quickly you will get results. In this article, we explore rapid PCR accuracy and discuss how it compares to other tests.

What is the rapid PCR test?

A rapid PCR test is a nasal swab diagnostic that detects genetic material belonging to the SARS-CoV-2 virus to determine if you are actively infected with the Covid-19 virus. Unlike the RT-PCR test, this test can be processed onsite with results in 30 minutes or less.

What to expect from Rapid PCR accuracy

Rapid PCR tests, like their RT-PCR cousins, have an extremely high accuracy rate, with a Cochrane study finding 95% of samples correctly identified. Antigen tests, by contrast, have a one in five chance of returning incorrect results.

Test accuracy can be impacted by the brand of the test and when the sample was taken. Tests may be most accurate during the first week of symptoms, which is believed to be because that is when the virus is most prevalent in someone’s system.

Regardless of which test you choose, it’s important to quarantine yourself from others until you can be tested if you have symptoms such as dry cough, exhaustion, fever, or other signs of Covid.

What are the benefits of rapid tests?

The main benefit of using a rapid PCR test is being able to obtain highly accurate results in a quick time frame. This is especially beneficial for those who may need to get tested before something important, such as travel, and have minimal time to get a more extensive test done.

Fast results are also advantageous for people who live with someone in a vulnerable group, such as the elderly, pregnant women, or immunocompromised individuals.

Note: If you need to be tested for travel before getting on a plane, ensure you get your test completed no more than three days before you travel.
